10 DIY Home Ideas to Make Your Space Feel Like New!

You don’t need to break the bank to refresh your decor! Everything is good for a cheap and simple decorative makeover, from whole rooms to specific pieces in your home. DIY allows everyone to hop on all kinds of decoration trends to achieve a nice and original decoration with little elbow grease.

Find out my 10 DIY ideas for a personalized and inexpensive space:

1- Declutter and clean your home: This is an essential step to start fresh in 2021 and you don’t have to invest any money! Organize your closets by dividing everything into five piles: keep, donate, sell, donate and throw. Continue with your cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom. Toss all expired products and items that you just don’t need. Then, before putting everything back, vacuum thoroughly for a complete revamp.

Now take the time to move your furniture and decor around to give your space another look. Keep in mind to move your furniture away from the walls to create a more intimate seating.

2- Apply a fresh coat of paint: Painting is inexpensive and can completely change a space by giving more depth and light. You can paint an accent wall in your living room, bedroom, or entrance. Choose a different color that goes with your style. Skip the beige and white and try a greenish-blue or a dark green. Another way to make a statement with paint is to paint your kitchen and bathroom cabinets, which makes a great update without a big renovation.

3- Dress up with trim and molding: This will add character and charm to your space. You can use trim and molding on walls or ceilings in any room. You can also use it on architectural features such as built-in cabinets, doors, and archways.

4- Use furniture hacks: If you have a good piece of furniture, but it looks a little tired, and you don’t want to spend money to replace it, this tip is for you. There are a lot of creative options to give life to tired furniture, like painting or using wallpaper and adhesive contact paper. You can also reupholster chairs or sofa.

5- Add wallpaper: You can use traditional wallpaper or peel and stick wallpaper, in both cases, you can use it not only to do a featured wall but also you can use it on the ceiling. You can cover half a wall, frame it, and hang it as art or use it to refresh a plain lampshade or create a headboard in your bedroom.

6- Gallery wall: You can create a gallery wall in all rooms of your home, including your bathroom. You can choose to display family photos, your art collection, a themed collection, or mix all of these! You can choose matching frames or mix and match various styles. First, you have to make a plan: start with the larger pieces and then fill with smaller ones. You have to treat all of them like one large piece and hang them at the same height as your eyes when standing - between 57 to 60 inches from the floor.

You can also use mirrors, they bring light into rooms and make spaces appear larger.

7- Change outdated light fixtures: You can't imagine the impact this makes in a room. You can buy a new pendant for your kitchen, change the old frosted globe from your bathroom vanity lamps, get rid of your old ceiling fan and replace them with a modern one or use a chandelier. Also, you can only change lampshades if your budget is tight.

Be sure to buy LED bulbs so they last longer. You can also add dimmers on lamps and in existing switches to regulate the intensity of the light and change the atmosphere depending on your mood and the time of day. Another way to change the atmosphere of your space is to vary the points of light with string lights, pendant lights, wall lights, table lamps.

8- Replace cabinets hardware: New cabinet hardware for your kitchen or bathroom gives a dramatic new feel for little money spent. You need to measure the length between the drill holes for your current hardware so you know the right size to buy.

You can do the same for your dresser drawers in your bedroom, for your credenza, or your built-in bookshelf.

9- Bring the outside in: Plants are the best decorations to create cozy and fresh environments. The key is to use more than one and in different sizes. In the living room, a large plant in the corner gives depth, relaxation, and harmony. You can use plants on bookcases, shelves, or by hanging them.

If you're not good at taking care of them, you can use fake ones - there are beautiful ones.

10- Update floors: You can use different techniques for a quick, easy, and cheap update.

a) Paint, yes, again! You can paint wood and tile floors in one solid color or use stencils. There are specific paints for wood and tile floors. Before painting your floors, they need to be sanded and cleaned. Then, after a coat of primer, you can paint them (2-3 coats most of the time) and finally topcoat/sealer. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

b) Adhesive vinyl flooring: they are durable, water-resistant, and easy to clean.

c) New vinyl peel and stick tiles. They are made with new technology that allows you to use them in the bathroom and kitchen. They come in multiple styles and colors.

There you go! Those were my top 10 DIY home decor options to start feeling fresh and new. It’s safe to say that 2020 has been a difficult year for many of us, so by revamping your home, you’ll feel like you’re leaving 2020 behind you and starting off brand new.
